Professor Vicki Karaminas
Professor of Fashion and Director of Doctoral Studies
Vicki Karaminas is Professor of Fashion at Massey University Aotearoa New Zealand. In 2024 she was awarded the Humanities Aranui Medal from the Royal Society Te Apārangi for outstanding and innovative research. In 1997, she was the awarded the University Medal in the Arts and Social Sciences by the University of Technology Sydney where she graduated with a Doctorate of Philosophy (2002).
Karaminas holds an honorary Professorial position at the University of Sydney and is an Honorary Fellow of the University of Melbourne. She has published over 20 books on fashion, gender and sexuality and her work has been translated and published into several languages other than English.
As the leading scholar in her field, Karaminas attracts many international doctoral students who travel to study under her supervision, many of whom have published their theses on completion and gained employment in the tertiary sector. In 2007, Karaminas established the Popular Culture Association of Australia and New Zealand (POPCAANZ), and the associated Australasian Journal of Popular Culture, and The Journal of Asia Pacific Pop Culture, publishing research and providing grants and bursaries to support and promote the study of popular culture in New Zealand and Australia.
