Jonathan King
Senior Lecturer, Film & TV Pathway Lead
Jonathan King has been a filmmaker for more than 25 years, directing more than 100 NZ music videos, several short films, and feature films including Black Sheep (2006), Under the Mountain (2009) and REALITi (2014). He also writes and draws comics and graphic novels for kids. His 2020 graphic novel, The Inkberg Enigma was published in New Zealand, Australia, the USA and the UK. His teaching areas include writing and directing for screen, and all other aspects of screen production with a particular current interest in the possibilities of Virtual Production.

Recent research successes
The Understudy (2022)
Jonathan was the Producer, Editor, DOP and oversaw the VFX for this short film, shortlisted for the Rhode Island Film Festival.
Everything But and Here it Is (2021)
Jonathan directed and produced and executed VFX and animation for these two music videos for Damien Binder.
The Inkberg Enigma (2020)
Jonathan was the writer and artist for this graphic novel, published by Gecko Press in New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and the UK. The novel was shortlisted for the Junior Fiction Award and Best First Book Award at the Children’s Book Awards, and was a Finalist in the Best Children’s Book category at the PANZ Book Design Awards.
